Deux grands événements du secteur langagier auront lieu l’un après l’autre dans la même journée!

The Unconference format is designed to facilitate a spontaneous, free-flowing exchange of ideas. In the opening session, participants suggest and promote discussion topics of their choice. They then vote to prioritize which topics will be addressed during the ensuing three to four sessions. The sessions themselves are moderated to ensure fluidity, but are not structured, per se. Prepared presentations are not given. Participants are expected to engage in the conversation to provide ideas, commentary, and counterpoint.

AILIA went through a major transformation at the end of 2013 by becoming a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization, and your support is fundamental to making it possible. We have continued to grow, offering more and larger events and activities, which is a tribute to our dedicated and hardworking Executive Committee and Board Members. We are very excited to be hosting the 2019 ISO TC 37 Annual Conference in June 2019, a major undertaking for AILIA. We are proud to be representing Canada’s Language industry on the international stage.
As an organization, our activities have grown to the point that we need to have resources beyond what is practical strictly through the work of volunteers. We have been taking tentative steps, including hiring a firm to assist us with our social media activities, but we need to have more paid assistance to ensure that we can continue to build on our success.
We trust you will appreciate that renewing your AILIA membership is a good business decision and a wise investment in our industry and future. If you are not already a member, hopefully you will make the decision to join.

For the first time ever, the Translation Games are coming to York University’s Glendon College from March 8 to 10, 2019.
Each year, teams from all Canadian university translation programs come together to parade their prowess in French to English and English to French translation. Elite students from four Canadian provinces, the translators of tomorrow, compete in a variety of challenges for bragging rights while also forming friendships with competitors.
For the first time in the 14-year history of the Games, Glendon is introducing a demonstration competition: Spanish to English translation!
Members of the translation industry, i.e. language service providers and professional associations, play two essential roles in bringing the Games to life:
1. Their sponsorship support helps defray the costs of hosting the Games.
2. Many sponsors attend the Games to mingle with top-notch translation students and their professors. They forge ties with the university sector, raising their visibility with both.
Do you want to participate this year? Visit our website, translationgames.ca for more information. And contact us at comité.jeuxdelatraduction@gmail.com to request a sponsorship kit.
AILIA to host the 2019 ISO TC 37 International Meetings in Ottawa: Sponsorship opportunities available
In 2019, Canada will host the most important ISO language standards event, the ISO TC 37 International Meetings, to be held from June 23 to June 28, 2019 in Ottawa. The meetings are hosted by AILIA (the Canadian Language Industry Association) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), and co-hosted by the University of Ottawa. Language experts from over 60 countries are expected to attend.
The mission of ISO technical committee 37 is to serve all fields and applications, where human-human and human-machine communication are involved. This refers in particular to the language industry products, such as language technology tools and content resources, and language services. The standards this committee produces are fundamental for language resource management, knowledge management, and content management.
Governments, intergovernmental organizations and an increasing number of enterprises also use ISO TC 37 standards for the formulation of policies concerning the use of language as such, or in relation to education, information and knowledge management. A number of studies have been conducted demonstrating the increasing demands for innovative approaches to foster multilingualism and the return on investment for managing terminology and other language and content resources according to ISO TC 37 standards.
TC37 is recognized for having an impact horizontally across all industries, which is strategically important for the whole process of standardization, and its five subcommittees are:
ISO/TC 37/SC 1 Principles and methods
ISO/TC 37/SC 2 Terminology workflow and language coding
ISO/TC 37/SC 3 Management of terminology resources
ISO/TC 37/SC 4 Language resource management
ISO/TC 37/SC 5 Translation, interpreting and related technology
Major language industry providers have come forward to support the event.
For more information or if you are interested in being a sponsor, please write to Maryse Benhoff, AILIA Secretary and Chair, ISO at maryse@bgcommunications.ca to discuss the opportunities available.
