Sharon Steinberg

Sharon Steinberg has worked in the translation industry for more than 25 years. She was the Vice President Operations/Co-Owner of HSN Linguistic Services Ltd., a prominent Ottawa-based multilingual translation provider.

In 2001, HSN was acquired by Lexi-tech International Inc., Canada’s largest private service language provider. Sharon was appointed to the position of Director of Operations for Lexi-tech International Inc.’s Toronto office. In 2009 Lexi-tech was acquired by CLS Communication, combining to create one of the world’s largest LSP with 19 offices throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Under Sharon’s leadership, the CLS Lexi-tech Toronto office grew from a sales office to become CLS Lexi-tech’s multilingual centre of excellence. In 2016 Sharon transitioned into a new role as Director of Translation at All Languages Inc.   Sharon holds a BA Arts (Political Science) from Carleton University.

Having studied business administration and marketing, she has a customer-focused background and in-depth knowledge of the consumer packaged goods and marketing/advertising industries in Canada.

Lola Bendana, Director

Lola Bendana

Lola has a degree in international relations with a specialization in Latin American Studies and English-Spanish interpreting and translation. She worked in Costa Rica as a cultural/foreign affairs facilitator with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as head of international relations with the Nicaraguan Committee for Refugees. After immigrating to Canada, she worked as a freelancer for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada offering pre-departure and intercultural effectiveness courses on Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Lola Bendana has been involved in the translation and interpreting field for over 28 years; since 1997, she has been the Director of Multi-Languages Corporation. She has published numerous articles about interpreting and translation. 

In the past, she served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Healthcare Interpretation Network (HIN), she chaired the Terminology Committee and the Policy Committee where she led the project to create the national standards of Canada for Community Interpreting (NSGCIS); she participated in the Critical Link Canada Standards of Practice and Training Committee; she was invited to join the Language Interpretation Training Curriculum Advisory Committee headed by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship (MCI) in collaboration with College Connect; she was selected as a voting member of the technical Committee of the Canadian General Standards Board that created the Canadian national translation service standards CAN CGSB 131.10-2008; she was voted as Canada’s representative of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA). In 2007 she won the Language Industry Association (AILIA) National Award for Outstanding Contribution to the translation sector. Lola served on the IMIA Executive Board 2009-2014 where she served as the President of the IMIA for the last 4 years and as delegate to FIT North America (2012-2014). She was the Chair of the Language Industry Association of Canada (AILIA) Translation Committee and member of the Interpreting Committee. She was a member of the ASTM F43 Committee on Language Services and the Canadian Council on Community Interpreting (CCCI). In 2013-2014 she was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Network on Terminology TermNet.

Lola published a book in collaboration with Dr. Alan Melby “Almost Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Translation” and a book in collaboration with Professor Helen Campbell “How to get it right when contracting Conference Interpreting services”.

Presently, she is a member of the Board of Directors and Past-President of the Language Industry Association of Canada (AILIA). Lola has been a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO TC37 since 2007 where she participates as an expert delegate to create international standards for translation and interpreting and is the current President of the Ontario Council on Community Interpreting (OCCI).

On the personal side, Lola has a passion for psychology and personal empowerment, is a Trainer with the Anthony Robbins organization and Director of the Toronto Power Group. Lola is a published author of the Chicken Soup for The Soul: “Time to Thrive.”

Maryse M. Benhoff is President and Co-founder of BG Communications International Inc., with its head office located in Montreal, Canada. She is responsible for the company’s international development, marketing, financial planning, and organizational structure, boasting clients and suppliers from around the globe. With more than 20 years of experience in the translation industry, she is always looking to create a better business environment for all the players.

To that end Ms. Benhoff Co-founded the Association of Canadian Companies in Translation and Interpretation (ACCTI) in 2003.

She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association de l’industrie de la langue / Language Industry Association (AILIA) since 2012.

Served as the official representative for Canada from 2003 – 2006 on the Comité européen de normalisation (CEN Committee) for the development of the European EN 15038 Translation standard.

Served as a translation expert from 2007 - 2008, on the Canadian General Standards Board, mandated to develop a national standard for Canada (CGSB/CAN 131.10) for the corporate translation sector.

Always supporting the excellent work of ISO TC 37, since April 2014 she is the International Secretary of ISO TC 37/SC2 as well as the AILIA mandated Chair of the Canadian Mirror Committee to ISO TC 37 for the creation of international standards in the area of language.

Nicole Sévigny, C. Tr., Honorary Member & Chair of Terminology

Nicole Sévigny has received degrees in translation and in public administration; she pursued a long and fruitful career with the Government of Canada’s Translation Bureau. Recently retired (May 2014), she held numerous positions involving increasing responsibilities, from translator to Director of translation services serving various Federal Public Service departments.

In the Fall of 2001, she joined the Terminology Standardization Directorate as Director of Standardization Strategies. In this capacity, she is responsible amongst other things for developing the Directorate’s strategic orientations and for coordinating and managing the relationships and parternships that the Directorate maintains with various networks and organizations at the federal, national and international levels. In this context, Nicole Sévigny’s involvement in the field of terminology standardization is multifaceted: for example, she chairs the Canadian Advisory Committee to the ISO Technical Committee 37 (ISO TC 37) and is International Secretary to ISO TC 37 Subcommittee 2; she manages large-scaled projects like the Techno-Linguistic Co-operation - Africa (involving five African countries) in partnership with the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF); finally, she serves in different capacities in numerous committees and councils, networks and associations, for instance the Federal Terminology Council, the National Terminology Council, the Joint Committee on Terminology in Canada (JCTC), the Réseau panlatin de terminologie (Latin Union), the International Information Centre for Terminology (INFOTERM), the European Association for Terminology (EAFT), etc.

Nicole Sévigny is a certified translator and a member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes du Québec (OTTIAQ) where, for about 10 years, she held the position of provincial administrator and treasurer as well as vice-chair and chair of the Outaouais Regional Section. She received the Canadian Translators, Terminologists ans Interpreters Council’s (CTTIC) Volunteer Award in 2003. Moreover, in 2005 and 2008, she was elected to the International Federation of Translators’ (FIT) Council and chaired the Terminology Committee. Finally, Nicole Sévigny was made knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République française and appointed Honorary member of INFOTERM Executive Board.

Robin has a distinguished career spanning 20+ years in the translation and localization industry. Currently, Robin is Vice President, Business Development for CLS LexiTech, owned by Lionbridge. Robin specializes in business development, organic sales growth, developing channels, and customer acquisition. He builds deep relationships with his customers spanning the Fortune 2000, champions their needs, and is a recognized leader in managing business development teams while increasing sales.

André has excellent reputation in the industry, has worked in strategic business development at several companies for over 20 years and directed major client acquisitions, developed and implemented strategies to support business objectives, lead various key initiatives to reduce operating cost, increase productivity, grow customer base and market share, in addition to other partnership initiatives.

Fabien Côté is a certified translator and President of Trans-IT Translations inc., a translation service provider established in Laval in 2008. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Université de Montréal and is a member in good standing of OTTIAQ. After a career in computer sciences, Fabien leveraged his first university studies in literature to devote himself to translation, initially as a freelancer. He has served on boards of directors including the Association of Linguistic Services Managers’ board, where he co-founded and chaired the Committee for the Promotion of Canadian Language Services.

Paul Penzo

Throughout his career, Paul has held a long list of executive positions in translation and interpreting-industry associations. His knowledge and commitment have been instrumental in moving the industry forward for the benefit of all stakeholders.

Paul continues to stay at the forefront of the industry and is currently a Steering Committee Member of the Canadian Coalition on Community Interpreting (CCCI) and the Ontario Coalition on Community Interpreting (OCCI).

Paul's contributions are in vision-setting and crafting of the official strategic and tactical plans that will satisfy a balanced representation of industry stakeholders. Coalition participants include interpreting-service providers (commercial and not-for-profit), training organizations (colleges and community based), purchasers from different sectors (government, health, legal, social services), and interpreter associations. 

Peter Madahian

Peter has over 9 years of progressive management experience in language services with a focus on streamlining processes, implementations, and operations management. His business and functional knowledge of and his depth of skills in business process analysis have enabled him to successfully lead Exacta Interpreting Inc. on large-scale implementation projects in support of customer requirements. Peter has over 15 years of experience in lean manufacturing prior to joining Exacta, which has given him a first-hand understanding of the day-to-day issues faced by organizations, and the perspective necessary to assist clients when it comes to delivery of services. Peter’s formal education consists of a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Masters of Business Administration degree focusing on Manufacturing and Technology.

Stephan Gervais

Stéphan Gervais, co-founder of Adéquat, Linguistic Services Inc., is a certified translator with more than 20 years of experience. He completed his training in translation, terminology and linguistics at Concordia University and at Université de Montréal. From the launching of his company in 1993 to today, he has worked on the many sides of translation: terminology research, glossary development, file processing, referencing, translation, revision and quality assurance. He has also been involved in various localization projects, the most impressive of which, an application with more than 800 windows, and a help file of nearly one million words. His strong interest in technology led him to explore with enthusiasm the operation and use of translation tools, such as memoQ, concordance softwares, and terminology databases.
