Promotion

  • More than 40 announcements and articles of interest for the profession posted on the What’s New? Page of the JCTC’s Web site (from January 2007 to date).
  • Symposium Terminology: Driven by Technology, but to Where?, the very first meeting of the registrants in the Directory of Terminologists in Canada (February 2010).
  • Survey sent (June 2009) to all the registrants in the Directory of Terminologists in Canada for the purpose of compiling a more accurate profile of the people working in terminology, gathering data on their employers and the university training offered in the country, and determining the theme of the first symposium being organized for them.
  • Creation of the Directory of Terminologists in Canada; prototype presented at the Language Technologies Research Center (LTRC), October 2006, and official launch at OTTIAQ’s Grand rendez-vous des terminologues, February 2007.
  • Creation of the JCTC Web site, a forum for those who practice terminology and hold the profession at heart, February 2007.
  • Collaboration in the preparation of a special issue of OTTIAQ’s Circuit magazine focussing on the terminology profession, summer 2005.
  • Participation in the development and launch of the Association of Linguistic Services Managers (ALSM) Manager’s Toolkit, which addresses terminology work, December 2004.
  • Presentation of the work of the three project groups (Training, Image and Recognition, and Economic Value) at OTTIAQ’s Grand rendez-vous des terminologues, April 2004.

DELISLE, Jean. "La terminologie au Canada : histoire d’une profession," Montréal (Québec), Linguatech éditeur, 2008, 468 p.

This book covers the beginnings of the profession, the two main approaches to terminology (language planning and translation-focused), professional recognition, the Quebec school of terminology, training, publications and support networks.
A significant section deals with the major terminology banks, which are far and away the most impressive feats for which terminologists should take full credit and decision makers be congratulated. Containing an abundance of illustrations, the book includes a detailed chronology (1902-2008) and an extensive bibliography.

Recognition of the profession

  • Public Works and Government Services Canada 2007 Award of Excellence, Partnership and Teamwork category, given to the team responsible for the Secretariat and the co ordination of JCTC activities for the innovative Directory of Terminologists in Canada project, October 2007.
  • 2004 Eugen Wüster Prize presented to Robert Dubuc during the Focus Day on Terminology in Canada on February 2004, and the Annual General Meeting of OTTIAQ on June 2004.
  • Student of the Year Award presented to a terminology trainee during International Translation Day at the Translation Bureau on September 2004.
